Self-care is about taking care of ourselves first before we can give energy to others. It is important for our emotional wellness and health to ensure that we are truly happy from within. Practicing self-care is not just a one-time act, rather it’s an awareness to make it a consistent part of our routines. It does not have to be complicated, expansive, or super expensive either. Little acts of self-care are just as important as the bigger ones. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of prioritizing self-care and discuss little acts that can make a big difference in improving our overall well-being.

Prioritize Sleep
Lack of sleep can have a significant impact on our physical and emotional health. Getting at least seven hours of sleep every day can significantly improve our mood, attention span, and overall quality of life. Limiting the use of electronic devices before bed, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and creating a comfortable environment conducive to rest helps. I usually sleep with a candle, essential oil diffuser, and lavender incense on a table next to my bed. In all its forms, lavender promotes better rest and if you combine it with an evening tea, you’ll be sure to fall asleep within minutes.

Take Breaks
It’s essential to step away from work and other obligations to relax and recharge. It can be as simple as taking a few minutes each hour to stretch or walk away from our desks, spending time outdoors, scheduling time for a massage or other relaxing activity. One technique that I’ve found useful is the pomodoro technique. It’s a tool that involves splitting work tasks into 25-minute intervals, known as Pomodoro’s, with breaks scheduled in between each interval. This may not work for everyone, but it sure has helped me to get things done while prioritizing self-care.

Connect with Others
Establishing connections with friends, family, and colleagues can have a significant impact on our psychological well-being. The right social support can help reduce stress levels, improve self-esteem, and enhance our sense of belonging. Although I live in the Wild West where there is more land than people, I still find the time to travel and to spend time with loved ones. Sometimes, it can get challenging finding others who align with you at a soul level, so I’d like to elaborate a little more on the importance of having the right social connections.
Have you ever heard the saying that your network is your net worth? Or, if you have 4 negative or broke friends, then you’re the 5th one. Well, there is some truth to these sayings because people can have the power to influence your actions, words, and even your life. Establishing the right connections may help with personal development and overall happiness. Making time for social events, reaching out to a life coach, and nurturing current relationships can make a significant difference in prioritizing self-care.

Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is about being present in the moment and being aware of our thoughts and sensations. It can help us manage stress, anxiety, and negative emotions. Practicing mindfulness can be as simple as taking a few deep breaths, practicing yoga or meditation, or being fully present during a meal or activity. Being present can be a challenge because most of us are always thinking about our next move or something that we forgot to do yesterday. Living in the present moment gives you the opportunity to appreciate life because the truth is, we are not promised another minute, hour, or day. What has helped me in this category is practicing gratitude every day upon waking up.
When you focus on what you’re grateful for, it opens the doors to so many blessings and teaches you how to live in the present moment. if you need some help with this, try out “The Gratitude Journal- A 28 Day Guide to Shift from Complaints to Contentment“. This PDF document will ensure that you are prioritizing self-care.

Nutrition and Exercise
Proper nutrition and exercise can play a vital role in our physical and emotional health. Regular exercise can release endorphins, which can improve our mood and reduce stress levels. You don’t have to go to the gym to exercise as there are so many options out there. I usually make the time to do yoga in the morning or at night to release and to treat my body, mind, and spirit well. A balanced diet can provide essential nutrients that can boost our immune system and improve our physical health. Just being mindful of what you’re eating is enough to make a huge difference.
Practicing small acts of self-care can have a significant impact on our mental and physical health. Self-care practices can be integrated into our daily routines to promote balance, relaxation, and a sense of fulfillment. It’s important to prioritize self-care and consider it a fundamental aspect of our lives. By doing this, we will be more equipped to handle life’s challenges, focus on our priorities and live a healthier, happy, and more fulfilling life. Remember, self-care is not selfish but rather necessary for our overall well-being.
